Basically, it is the ability to compensate metabolic imbalances in a suffering organism by means of natural substances, of vegetable origin. ‘Fitotherapy’ derives directly from the current popular medicine in use almost as long as the human beings have been on this earth, rationalised both in terms of the quantities to give and the practicality of its usage.

Apart from the toxicity or the presence of side effects or undesired effects, which must be absolutely avoided, the issues to resolve in order to enable Fitotherapy to become and effective and usable means are:

- Frequency of dosage

- Fastness of action

- Elimination of negative effects on the liver caused by the presence of ethylic alcohol in the solvent used to extract the active parts of the vegetable components.

1) The standardisation of the dosage

Classic medicine suggests as dosage, a well-defined quantity of pure ‘Active Principle’ (generally a substance which is laboratory made). The parameters of reference to identify this average dose are related to the efficacy, un-harmfulness, the average lethal dose, etc. In reality, the dose chosen is one with therapeutic characteristics presenting acceptable levels of side effects.

By utilising natural products, which intrinsically are not subject to chemical-physical treatments, the ‘pure Active Principle’ is overruled; in the final extract, in fact, in addition to the ‘Active Principle’ other non-chemically identifiable substances can be found (a combination of proteins, vitamins, mineral salts, enzymes, etc) which are hydro-soluble, generally addressed as ‘fito-complex’. Under classic medicine, these are considered impurities.

In reality, for some years if was known that the fito-complex has an extraordinary importance in the efficiency of natural remedies. The ‘Active Principle’ determines the primary activity of the remedy, The Fito-complex determines its efficiency, speed of function: in summary, the bio-disposition.

Accurate tests run on a vast sample of people with liver diseases, have demonstrated, for instance, that the prescription of LEGALON, a drug based on silimarina (Active Principle contained in the seeds of cardo Mariano) can obtain a discrete hepato-protective effect; by administering a total extract of Cardo Mariano (silimarina + fitocomplesso), a regenerating effect of the liver is obtained, which is vital in the treatment of viral hepatitis.

These properties of total extracts are present in all extracts piante (plants) officinali.

The average effective dose of the vegetable product is fixed by considering standard a plant extract that presents constant physical characteristics (specific weight, dry residual, initial plant/solvent ratio, surface chromatic analysis, etc).

The relationship between these factors, expressed in a mathematical formula, must give a numerical value which is constant and defined. When formulating the extract,

By altering certain parameters, it is possible to determine the exact starting plant/solvent combination e the operating way to obtain this number. One can therefore obtain a new concept of standard extract subdivided in ‘Fundamental Units’(FU). The necessary quantity of FU to administer to obtain a given biological result is the average dose. Working in a vegetable environment, there are no undesirable side-effects.

The average dose, allots the exact repetition of the therapy adopted for any situation and almost every patient.

2) The elimination of the ethylic alcohol and the augmentation of the speed of action

Under the Code of International Pharmacy, the ‘Mother Tint’, which is the fundamental element of the ‘Fito-therapy’, is described as a solution of Active Principle, in purified water and ethylic alcohol. This means that the fundamental therapeutic product of natural medicine is obtained diluting the Active Principles contained in a plant or in a pre-determined mix of plants, in a solution composed of purified water and ethylic alcohol in variable percentages (according to the plant subject to extraction). If considering that the starting quantity of ethylic alcohol ranges between 30 and 70% of the entire solution, the patient will assimilate, on top pf the ‘Active Principle. Also the 7.35 g of ethylic alcohol solved per day (considering 15g of extract per day with an average percentage of 50%); over a month period. The patient would assimilate the equivalent of a Cognac bottle, but trying to dis-intoxicate his liver!

We have eliminated the possibility of self-inflicted liver damages by creating a solvent composition under the trademark of ‘GLICERIL’.

Made of a mixture of purified water, glycerine, propoli, equiseto and other plants and subject to extraction with specific methods, this is able to dilute all the Active Principle contained in the plant and almost all the Fitocomplesso that comes with it. This determines a more efficient final product, faster and free from negative effects of the ethylic alcohol.

The presence of propoli in the solvent formulation ensures the protection from bacterial pollution of the final product that can conserve itself for extended periods. The presence of equiseto, rich in mineral salts, makes the ‘Active Principle’ more easily absorbed in the organism, hence allowing a faster biological reaction, giving it an extraordinary bio-disposition.

Variation of the qualitative and quantitative contents obtained by rationalising the values of spretto-metric absorbency of a mother tint to a total glycerine extract of

Cynara Scolimna. Each peak indicates a particular Active Principle or a component of the fito-complex. The surface contained between the axes and its respective point of analysis indicates the quantity of material extracted.
